Location Intelligence, WebGIS & GeoBI Explained:

Location Intelligence

Location Intelligence is the capacity to organize and understand complex phenomena through the use of geographic relationships inherent in all information. By combining geographic and location related data with other business data, organizations can gain critical insights, make better decisions and optimize important processes and applications. Location Intelligence offers organizations opportunities to streamline their business processes and customer relationships to improve performance and results.

Location Intelligence tools leverage a variety of data sources including aerial maps, geographic information systems (GIS), consumer demographics as well as a user's own customer records. Popularised by business to consumer (B2C) applications, location Intelligence is experiencing rapid acceptance as there is confirmation that the value of location intelligence may be regulated by established laws and ethics depending on the specific geographic entities and scale under which they are scrutinized. Platform integration is another factor contributing to the growth, as companies can now integrate Location Intelligence directly into business operations.

The term Location Intelligence is often used to describe tools and data employed to geographically "map" information. These mapping applications can transform large amounts of data into color-coded visual representations that make it easy to see trends and generate meaningful intelligence. The creation of location intelligence is directed by domain knowledge, formal frameworks, and a focus on decision support.

WebGIS

WebGIS is the process of designing, implementing, generating and delivering maps on the World Wide Web and its product. While web mapping primarily deals with technological issues, web cartography additionally studies theoretic aspects: the use of web maps, the evaluation and optimization of techniques and workflows, the usability of web maps, social aspects, and more. WebGIS is similar to web mapping but with an emphasis on analysis, processing of project specific geodata and exploratory aspects. Often the terms WebGIS and web mapping are used synonymously, even if they don't mean exactly the same. In fact, the border between web maps and WebGIS is blurry. Web maps are often a presentation media in WebGIS and web maps are increasingly gaining analytical capabilities.

A special case of web maps are mobile maps, displayed on mobile computing devices, such as mobile phones, smart phones, PDAs and GPS. If the maps on these devices are displayed by a mobile web browser or web user agent, they can be regarded as mobile web maps. If the mobile web maps also display context and location sensitive information, such as points of interest, the term Location-based services is frequently used.

GEOBI

The rapid impact of technological growth thus resulted in the formation of GEOBI with which huge organizations are capable to enhance their decision making & supporting systems by making use of various phases in data processing such as compilation, storage, allocation and usage.

Geospatial Business Intelligence (GEOBI) has therefore recently stimulated an audible interest for the huge potential of combining spatial analysis and map visualization with proven BI tools and techniques such as data warehousing (DW), Online Analytical Processing (OLAP), reporting tools, dashboards and data mining.

In essence GEOBI integrates the best attributes of Business Intelligence and Geo Spatial facilities to create the GEOBI application.
